Latest Goings-On at the Benton Foundation
As many of you already know, I started a new job at the Benton Foundation last fall after spending five years at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The folks at Benton are keeping me busy on a variety of projects. My biggest activity is serving as editor of the Digital Divide Network. DDN is an online coalition of major non-profit groups and high-tech corporations working together to help bridge the digital divide. The website serves as a central hub for all the latest news, research and community projects regarding the divide, and will eventually become an interactive community where practictioners can come to share their experiences and ideas. I'm also serving as the moderator of a new listserv, DIGITALDIVIDE. DIGITALDIVIDE is the first email discussion dedicated to issues related to the digital divide. I started the list in mid-December; by February we had over 500 members from around the world. If you're interested in subscribing, send an email to digitaldivide-request@list.benton.org that says subscribe digitaldivide yourname in the first line of the message body and you'll be added to the list.
In March, the Benton Foundation released the report, The E-Rate in America: A Tale of Four Cities. I served as editor and contributing author to the report, which examines how the federal E-Rate program has helped bring Internet access to Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit and Milwaukee. If you're interested in the politics of educational technology and the Internet, I'd encourage you to read it.
